Stephanie interviews Dr. Sayida Peprah to discuss birth justice and ways to best support the mental and physical health of Black families. Dr. Sayida Peprah is both a licensed clinical psychologist and trained birth doula.  She specializes in multicultural psychology, trauma, suicide prevention and maternal mental health.  During this episode they discuss how implicit bias and trauma impact Black mothers, how to advocate for yourself during and after birth to get the best care, how providers can offer more culturally appropriate care, and resources to feel more empowered, supported, and heard throughout your journey.

Trigger warning: The episode includes discussions about birth trauma that some listeners may find triggering.

Topics Discussed:

  • How implicit bias plays a role in Black mothers’ care
  • Examples of trauma during the birth experience
  • Stories and experiences of Black mothers
  • Ways doulas play an essential role in supporting mothers
  • How she supports Black mothers as a psychologist and doula
  • Resources to feel more empowered, understand your rights and feel  heard
  • How providers can offer more culturally appropriate care and explore their own biases
