On today’s episode, Dr. Elana interviews environmental medicine expert, Dr. Vivian Chen, MD. They took an in-depth look into water toxicity and share what moms can do to ensure they are providing clean water to their family. They discussed the overwhelm and confusion that many moms face when it comes to avoiding environmental toxins and share practical steps to easily minimize toxins from drinking, bath and shower water. It doesn’t need to cost thousands of dollars nor does it have to feel overwhelming. Dr. Elana and Dr. Viv leave you with actionable steps you can take to ensure your family is drinking clean and healthy water!

Topics Discussed:

  • Understanding common contaminants found in drinking water
  • How to test your home tap water
  • Why it is so important for young children to drink filtered water
  • Budget friendly filter options
  • Why bath and shower filters are a good investment
  • Things to know about bottled and carbonated water
  • How to shop for a filter that is right for your home water

Show Notes:

Dr. Chen is a UK trained medical doctor with 15 years of clinical experience. She is board certified in the UK in both internal medicine and family practice.

Her world turned upside down when her daughter was hospitalized soon after being born with symptoms no doctor could figure out. Through doing her own research, she was able to help her daughter recover. She also realized that the many years of chronic fatigue, acne and brain fog she had was due to environmental toxicity. This opened the world of root causes she had never considered before as a conventional medical doctor.

Today she lives in San Francisco with her family and coaches clients back to health by identifying root causes and implementing lifestyle solutions. She is also on a mission to help people reduce their toxin load because she believes environmental toxins to be one important root cause of many chronic health conditions.

Show Notes:

Autumn Fladmo Smith began her academic career with a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in dance from the University of Montana. Upon graduation, Autumn danced professionally while becoming a certified yoga instructor. Hoping to combine her love of dance with her passion for health, Autumn became a celebrity fitness trainer with Tracy Anderson, most notably completing a world tour with Jennifer Lopez.

While working as a fitness trainer, Autumn could see that exercise alone was not enough for many of her clients to achieve the radiant health they worked so hard to achieve. Meanwhile, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and anxiety continued to plague her personal health, starting in adolescence. These frustrations further ignited her passion and interest in the study of holistic nutrition. Through self-guided research, she and her husband, Chas, healed her IBS with the paleo diet. She then studied with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating to become a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and Hawthorn University where she obtained a Masters in Holistic Nutrition.

In 2013, she founded Paleovalley with her husband and brother-in-law. Paleovalley’s mission is to disseminate excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide. Autumn's commitment to health reached new heights last year following the birth of their son, Maverick. Also, Autumn became a Certified FDN Practitioner as of 2018!

She decided to change the narrative.

Her home-based fitness program takes women from the postpartum basics through total body, high intensity workouts that strengthen the core and pelvic floor.

Show Notes:

Street Parking was founded by Julian and Miranda Alcaraz in 2016. Miranda – after 15 years in the fitness industry, 8 years on CrossFit HQ seminar staff, and 8 years competing in CrossFit. Julian – after 10 years in the fitness industry, and 5 years competing in CrossFit. Both having trained and competed at the highest level – the CrossFit Games – they found themselves in new territory – busy. Julian was running a business and Miranda had settled into a full time job. At the time the couple was dating and lived over an hour away from each other. They noticed something interesting. The workouts they would post on their social media from HOME – with simple equipment – was what people who followed them responded to most.

An idea was formed. Post the simple workouts we are doing at home – so people can follow along. Charge a fee that is totally doable for most people. Create a community where we can push and motivate each other. The first ever workouts were posted in November 2016 (just a few days before Miranda found out she was pregnant with their baby boy). Memberships went up for sale the week before New Years. Within the first month, Street Parking had 700 Members.

As Street Parking continued to grow and the members were posting about how this had changed the game for them to be able to see success at home. The fire that Julian and Miranda felt to provide the best programming, community, and service possible grew as well. With their own lives about to change forever with the birth of their son – they knew that this was something they wanted to dedicate themselves to 100%. Miranda left her full time job. Julian sold his business.

Kelly’s website serves as a resource for her readers to find the latest research and rationale behind important nutrition principles, as well as delicious recipes and recommended products to fuel them well. In 2020, she launched the Be Well By Kelly Podcast to further provide listeners with her nutrition and wellness wisdom, and to introduce them to other health professionals with a wide array of experience and insights. With the desire to provide her coaching expertise to the public, Kelly developed the Fab 4 Fundamentals course, in which she simplifies the science of nutrition and empowers participants to confidently take charge of their health. She has expanded her nutrition curriculum to include a second course, Fab 4 Pregnancy, to provide moms-to-be with the wisdom, encouragement, and thoroughly researched recommendations they need to nourish themselves before, during, and after pregnancy. Additionally, Kelly released the Be Well by Kelly Protein Powder to round out the Body Love toolkit. This protein powder harnesses the power and benefits of simple yet wholesome protein and can easily be used in one of Kelly’s favorite tools, the #fab4smoothie. Through all of these resources, Kelly seeks to provide men and women with the tools they need to transform their health and their lives through nourishing whole foods and body-loving practices.
