Steph interviews Elise Loehnen, the author of the instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior and host of  Pulling the Thread, a podcast focused on pulling apart the stories we tell about who we are—and then putting those threads back together. Steph and Elise discuss the ways patriarchy impacts how women see themselves and what they police in each other. They discuss how the seven deadly sins impacts moms. Elise shares how the fear of sloth, gluttony, and envy leads to burnout, lack of confidence, feeling guilty about rest, and our relationship with our bodies before, during, and after pregnancy. We begin to dismantle these negative beliefs and thought patterns to help moms feel more freedom and joy in motherhood.

Topics Discussed:

  • Ways we subconsciously hide parts of ourselves.

  • How to lean into using your voice and saying what you mean.

  • Ways social media impacts motherhood.

  • How to break free of the belief that you’re not doing enough.

  • Navigating postpartum body image and envy.

Show Notes:

Elise Loehnen is a writer, editor, and podcast host who lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Rob, and their two sons, Max and Sam. She is the host of Pulling the Thread, a podcast focused on pulling apart the stories we tell about who we are—and then putting those threads back together. Ultimately Elise is a seeker and synthesizer, braiding together wisdom traditions, cultural history, and a deep knowledge of healing modalities to unlock new ways to contextualize who we are and why we’re here. She’s also the author of the instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good (Dial Press/PRH). The book weaves together history, memoir, and cultural criticism to explore the ways patriarchy lands in the bodies of women and embeds itself in our consciousness—and what we then police in ourselves and in each other. Regardless of our religious provenance, the self-denial implicit in each of the Seven Deadly Sins—Sloth, Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Anger—reads like a checklist of what it means to be a “good” woman. With awareness, we can begin to recognize these patterns of self-restriction, break the story, and move ourselves and each other toward freedom and balance.

Elise is a frequent contributor to Oprah, and has written for The New York Times, Elle Decor, Stylist, and more.

Dr. Elana interviews biological dentist, Dr. Leedia who is revolutionizing the way we think about oral health. Her approach focuses on overall wellness, long-term disease prevention, and empowerment through education. As a mother of two wonderful girls, Dr. Leedia recognizes the importance of women's dental health and early childhood dental education, making these areas a particular focus in her practice.

Currently, dental decay is the most common chronic disease in children worldwide, causing pain and trauma that is preventable. To combat this issue, Dr. Leedia created a course to teach parents the techniques she uses to reverse small cavities and bolster children's oral health.

In this episod, Dr. Leedia teaches us how and why kids are prone to cavities, what we can do as proactive parents to prevent and reverse dental cavities, and reviews essential information all parents should know about their kid’s teeth starting before the teeth even erupt!

Topics Discussed:

  • The anatomy of a child’s mouth and how a cavity can form

  • How early a child can have a cavity

  • Why some kids are more susceptible to cavities

  • 3 Tips every mom needs to know for optimizing her child’s oral health and avoid cavities

  • What foods to avoid (even “healthy foods”) that can contribute to cavities

  • The importance of baby teeth

  • The importance of oral health before teeth come in

  • How dental health before age 2 can impact oral health in adult life

Show Notes:

Dr. Leedia is a biological dentist who is revolutionizing the way we think about oral health. Her approach focuses on overall wellness, long-term disease prevention, and empowerment through education. As a mother of two wonderful girls, Dr. Leedia recognizes the importance of women's dental health and early childhood dental education, making these areas a particular focus in her practice.

In Dr. Leedia's Beverly Hills office, she offers a range of integrative dental therapies, including integrative dental extractions, responsible cosmetic dentistry, biomimetic fillings, safe mercury removal and detox, ozone therapies, micronutrient testing, an airway centric approach to dental care and so much more. While these may seem like disparate treatments, they all address the root cause of the most prevalent dental issue: decay. Currently, dental decay is the most common chronic disease in children worldwide, causing pain and trauma that is preventable. To combat this issue, Dr. Leedia created a course to teach parents the techniques she uses to reverse small cavities and bolster children's oral health.

Dr. Leedia's dedication to dental health extends beyond children. She recognizes that over 65% of women suffer from dental disease concurrent with pregnancy, and that inflammation in the mouth is linked to premature labor, low birth weight, heart disease, and more. This realization has prompted her to put a spotlight on the importance of women's dental health and the impact that hormones have on the oral cavity. By educating and empowering women and fostering collaboration between the medical and dental worlds, Dr. Leedia is helping patients achieve optimal whole body health.

Her dedication to her patients is evident in everything she does. She practices biological dentistry with her brother, Dr. Rashad, and together they bring over 32 years of experience to their work. They are passionate about creating seismic shifts in the world of dental health, one patient at a time. Their approach honors each patient as an individual, recognizing the unique needs and concerns that each brings to their practice.

My story:

I was diagnosed with chronic constipation and leaky gut at the age of 21.

At the time, I knew nothing about food allergies or sensitivities. Though when I look back on my childhood now, I recognize that I suffered the symptoms of chronic inflammation and reactions to food from an early age.

When I learned why I was having severe stomach pains and fluctuations in stool for years, I was exhausted. I had been through the ringer of the conventional medical system, finding no true answers to my concerns. That’s when I found naturopathic medicine.

What I discovered was a complete paradigm shift around healing our bodies and what it meant to truly be healthy. I also realized just how important health in childhood really is. The naturopathic approach made sense, I felt better than I ever had before, and since then I have made it my mission to share this medicine with others. This led me to attending the top naturopathic medical school in the country, Bastyr University in San Diego, CA, where I earned my doctorate.

My goal is to help your child feel better and stay healthy for years to come. I am not just trying to make their symptoms go away, but to truly treat the underlying cause so that they can thrive and become healthy adults. I can’t promise healing for your child will be linear or not take any effort, but I can promise that I will support you and your family along the way.

In my free time, you can find me at the local farmer’s markets finding fresh ingredients to cook with, somewhere out in nature, or spending time with her husband and pup, Chief!
