Mold can be a very scary and overwhelming topic for “Doctor Moms” to learn about. Yet even though complex, it shouldn’t be a topic to shy away from. Parents deserve to have the knowledge to advocate for optimal detection, testing, and remediation so they can ensure a safe home for their families.

In today’s episode, Dr. Elana interviews mold expert, Brian Karr, to share her personal story about buying a home that got flooded during escrow and how Brian helped support Dr. Elana each step of the way. We hope her story can be a teaching opportunity for other families to learn how to advocate and find solutions so they too can go to bed at night knowing they are living in a safe home.

Brian Karr is a second-generation indoor environmental consultant who specializes in working with hypersensitive individuals with complex chronic medical conditions. He helps individuals and families to understand if mold, mycotoxins, or other indoor pathogens exist in their homes that may be contributing to their health conditions, and how to remedy those issues.

Brian has become a mold & biotoxin expert to many medical practitioners across the country and has helped over 5,000 hypersensitive individuals worldwide to create healthier living environments that have allowed their doctors to help them get better.

Brian is the Co-Founder of We Inspect, the host of #moldfinders: RADIO and an expert at identifying indicators of mold growth. Including but not limited to strategic sampling, validating, and developing remedial strategies for mold growth and biotoxin production in all areas of a home or building including walls, floors, ceilings, crawl spaces, basements, attics, and HVAC systems.

If you want to equip yourself with the most up-to-date mold information - this is the episode for you!

Topics Discussed:

  • Dr. Elana’s story of how she advocated for mold detection, testing, and remediation in her home

  • The many deceiving mold practices you want to avoid

  • 5 things to look for to detect a water leak and possible mold

  • When air samples work and when they don’t work

  • The pros and cons of ERMI testing and interpretation mistakes

  • Why traditional fogging doesn’t get rid of mold

  • Why you should never use or rely on chemicals to kill mold

  • Best remediation practices

  • Options to consider if you are currently exposed to mold and not sure where to start!

Pain is something no one wants to experience and as moms we sure are susceptible to our fair share - be it from weird positions we nurse in, tendonitis of the wrist from holding babies, back pains from lifting our toddlers… the list goes on…. But there are VERY simple and some surprising things we can do to help us find pain relief.. and quickly!

This is why I invited Missy Bunch to today’s episode. She has a unique approach to pain relief that I’ve never heard of before and I became FASINTATED by her approach! You’ll love learning these simple techniques to ease those “mom pains” once and for all!

A little bit about Missy…

Missy is a multi-certified movement therapist who has been educating and coaching for over 13 years. As a young professional dancer, she battled many injuries over her career and one day she found someone who studied neurology (the study of the brain and nervous system). After one session with this person, her 4-year knee pain was completely gone. She knew she wanted to teach this approach to the world. The importance of brain function and using the nervous system to rapidly “debug” movement patterns, decrease pain and increase performance, has led her to teach and create lightning-fast improvements with people from all walks of life. Her specialties include injury prevention, injury rehabilitation, joint mobility and decreasing pain, holistically.

Topics Discussed:

  • 3 easy and quick practical therapies moms can do to prevent pain

  • Simple ways to ease neck pain moms often face when nursing

  • Mommy wrist pain relief techniques

  • Tips to relieve lower back pain

  • How eye exercises are effective for pain relief

  • The concept of a threat bucket and how to minimize your susceptibility to pain in the first place!

Sleep issues can cause a lot of stress for the entire family! I am a mother just like you, so I can empathize with multiple night-wakings and sleep-deprived seasons.

This is why I invited sleep expert Cara Walker from Well Rested Mama to do this interview with me and help teach about sleep. In this episode we talk about the circadian rhythm and at what age it develops, what normal expectations to have with sleep issues for our littles, how to establish healthy sleep habits at any age, tips for older kids who wake too early or middle of the night and so much more!

This interview comes directly from my Doctor Mom Membership program where I love to support you Doctor Moms with my tried and true holistic protocols for common pediatric conditions (think fever, runny nose, cough, anxiety, and more) and sleep is one of the conditions I cover as well. I invite experts to co-teach with me to help empower you mamas in how to navigate the conditions and stages you will inevitably be faced with.

Cara shares practical tips so you can be a proactive parent!

Topics Discussed:

  • The circadian rhythm and at what age it develops

  • What normal expectations we can have with sleep issues for our littles

  • Establishing healthy sleep habits at any age

  • Wake windows for infants

  • Sleepy cues for infants and toddlers

  • How a feeding schedule can help with sleep

  • Tips for older kids who wake too early or wake in the middle of the night

  • And more!

Show Notes:

My name is Cara Walker and I am so blessed to be married to not only my best friend, but the most amazing dad to our three beautiful children! As we embarked on our parenting journey in 2015, we knew our lives would be forever changed. Throughout my pregnancy, my husband and I often heard comments regarding sleep and how we would apparently never get to experience it again once the baby arrived. “Sleep now because you’ll never sleep again” was a crowd favorite.

Being an elementary school teacher, I know that children thrive on routine and structure. There had to be a way to provide my child with the sleep he needed; so my research began. My sister had previously worked with The Cradle Coach, a sleep consultancy firm based out of South Florida. They helped guide her daughter towards a healthy sleep foundation and I witnessed it happening. I saw how structured her days were and how much sleep she was getting at night. I saw how energized and peaceful she was while awake. I saw the amazing benefits it brought to her entire family!

The day I put my 9-week-old on a regular sleep schedule was when our lives truly changed for the better. Our days now had consistency. He was following predictable nap and feeding schedules. Everything fell into place. By 3 months old, he was sleeping through the night (12 hours straight) and happier than ever during the day! Fast forward 2 years to our daughter being born; I was able to implement a healthy sleep foundation from the beginning and her schedule has always been amazing.

I understand the struggle of being a tired mom and constantly trying to guess what your child needs or wants. As a new mother, you feel like the world is watching and pressuring you to do everything perfectly; that in itself can be exhausting. By implementing a consistent daily schedule and routine, I have created a positive sleep foundation for our family. Our lives are significantly easier and more stable.

Becoming a sleep consultant was one of the best decisions I have made. I love helping frustrated parents succeed while overcoming sleep deprivation and helping their children!

Steph interviews Matt Beaudreau, a provocative thought leader in educational and personal development. They have an open, honest conversation about what it means to raise resilient kids, especially young men, in today’s chaotic world. Matt has dedicated his life’s work to helping kids and young adults have more self-direction, confidence, a strong sense of character and personal responsibility. With experience as a teacher and the founder of Acton Academy Placer Schools and Apogee Strong, he deeply understands what’s missing from our traditional education system and modern society that is contributing to the mental and physical health crisis we’re seeing.  In this episode, Matt offers a much-needed perspective on ways parents can take radical responsibility for their child’s well-being.

Topics Discussed:

  • Unintentional ways we halt a child’s growth and resilience

  • Common challenges young men are facing

  • How we’re overcomplicating parenthood

  • What traditional education is missing

  • The most important thing kids need to thrive

Show Notes:

As a Keynote Speaker, Consultant, and Coach to organizations around the world, Matt Beaudreau's clients have ranged from Wells Fargo, Honeywell, and Lockheed Martin to American Eagle, Cedars-Sinai and the United States Air Force. Matt has a reputation as a provocative thought leader in educational and personal development practices. He is a two-time featured TEDx speaker and he was named Corporate Trainer of the Year at Stanford University, having spoken to over 250,000 people across the world.

In 2017, Matt Beaudreau Founded Acton Academy Placer Schools;  schools that utilize the Socratic method, with an emphasis on self-direction and cultivating confident, independent young people with a strong sense of character and personal responsibility. He has since helped to open multiple campuses around the world.

Pulling from his experience in the Acton model, in January of 2021, Matt co-founded Apogee Strong with Tim Kennedy, a mentorship program designed for young men from 12 to 22 to take on challenges presented by men who have come before them, in order to learn to lead. It is a right of passage through mentorship, action, and self-discovery so that young men can become true leaders. This has blossomed into a mission to bring back classic masculinity in the home, and fueled the launch of the Apogee Strong Dads Program in 2023.

His podcast, The Essential 11, is also geared towards emerging leaders, garnering advice from the world's leaders in business, sports, music and entertainment.

Last, but certainly not least; Matt is the founder of the Apogee Strong Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 that provides scholarships for school, experience, camp, and leadership opportunities for young men around the world.

Occupational therapy isn’t just a fancy clinic where kids who struggle go for therapy. Imagine a clinic being the great outdoors! Using nature as a kids backdrop to spark brain development is what we discuss in today’s episode with Kim Wilson, OT of Natures Path.

During this episode we learn what occupational therapy really is. Do kid’s have an occupation they need therapy for?

Hint: A kids occupation is PLAY!

To use kids play, especially in the outdoors, has SO many benefits. In today’s episode Kim teaches about all those benefits and practical ways to utlize the outdoors to optimize our kids brain and overall development!

Topics Discussed:

  • How nature provides the best experience and exposure to spark brain development

  • How the outdoors creates new synaptic connections

  • What the ultimate environment looks like for kids - peaceful, quiet, open nature versus parks, amusement parks, etc.

  • Attention restoration theory and how different types of input inside versus outside can impact the brain

  • How playgrounds may not be the best way to foster inner directive play

  • Why doing less is more when it comes to children’s activities

  • How moms can use “activity analysis” to learn and observe developmental gaps in their child

  • Trends Kim is seeing in her 17 years of this work what to look out for

Show Notes:

Kim is the owner and founder of Nature's Path Occupational Therapy, and is a pediatric occupational therapist in Colorado Springs, CO. With 17 years of experience as an OT, her initial 3 years were dedicated to adult neuro-rehab, focusing on brain and spinal cord injuries. She continues PRN work with this group. For the past 13 years, Kim has specialized in pediatric clinic-based and early intervention services, often incorporating outdoor therapy. Witnessing nature's therapeutic benefits both professionally and as a mother of 6, she is fervently devoted to integrating nature into childhood development. Nature's Path was conceived as an alternative therapeutic model. Kim holds a B.S. in Occupational Therapy from Boston University and an M.S. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Alabama, where she also earned her Low Vision certificate. As a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), she supports the mother-baby dyad in the infant's first year, addressing infant and toddler feeding from a developmentally holistic perspective. Beyond her roles as a mother and OT, Kim enjoys running, hiking, snowboarding, camping, and exploring the mountains.
